The Most Epic Views In The World

Travel Tips

IM00

People can be left breathless from many things, such as running a marathon or hiking at high altitudes for example. But it doesn’t always take physical exertion – sometimes, you just have to look at something that’s quite simply awe-inspiring and it takes your breath away. Ever had that feeling, when you stare out at the spectacular vista and a shudder rolls over you as you stand, dumbstruck, looking at the exquisite beauty in front of you? There’s nothing quite like an epic view to take your breath away, as the following examples will testify.

horseshoe-bend-768789_640

The Grand Canyon

An obvious choice perhaps, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore it. The legendary photographer Gordon Parks perhaps summed up the spectacular Grand Canyon view best of all when he said, “leave your binoculars at home.” And indeed, that’s not a bad idea. At 1.6 kilometers deep and 16 kilometers wide, the Grand Canyon offers countless awe-inspiring views. The vastness of it all is just supreme. Check out the South Rim for some of the best views of this awesome landscape.

The Niagara Falls

Still in the U.S., this trio of cascading waterfalls is a must-see for anyone. The Niagara Falls is without doubt one of the most impressive sights on Earth – more than 2.5 million liters of water gush over its 56-meter tall cliffs every second, creating a spectacle that just has to be seen to be believed. We suggest hopping over to the Canadian side of the border for the best view, where you can witness the majestic Horseshoe Falls. And don’t forget to jump aboard the Maid of the Mist for a stunning up-close view at the bottom!

niagara-falls-986537_640

Machu Picchu

Ever since Hiram Bingham discovered the “Lost City of the Incas” in 1911 they’ve become a magnet for hordes of anthropologists, historians and tourists alike. And while archaeologists continue to argue the toss over exactly why the Incas built this terrific monument, everyone agrees that Machu Picchu offers a stunning visual feast.

The ruins of Machu Picchu are truly one of the most breathtaking sights you’ll ever see, thanks to their the wondrous combination of mystery, history and natural wonder that blends perfectly into the epic mountainous landscape.

mountains-594608_640

The Northern Lights

The epic Northern Lights confounded the brightest minds on Earth for centuries before scientists finally worked out how they are created. The Northern Lights are a stunning aurora, a kind of bright glow that only occurs during darkness when charged particles from the sun break through the Earth’s magnetosphere. The charged particles collide with molecules already present in the atmosphere, creating “excited atoms” that fire off photons to release the extra energy, thus creating the awe-inspiring ‘glow’.

Auroras actually occur in several parts of the world, but aurora borealis is by far and away the most impressive. The sky is blanketed in a “curtain” of green, purple, red and white lights more than 1,500 times a year, and this epic display can be seen from various locations, including Alaska, Canada, Russia and Scandinavia.

The Best Places To Learn How To Surf For Beginners

Fortune Destination

Few escapades can match the buzz of surfing. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of pitting yourself against the ocean, catching the crest of the wave and wiping out at the end. And although it’s a terrific buzz there’s no need to be afraid if you’ve never done so before. What with special surfboards available for beginners and so many highly qualified instructors around, you’ll likely be able to stand up tall and ride a wave in your first session, and once you do, we guarantee you’ll be hooked.

surfer-1031311_640

But where to learn how to surf for beginners? Simple, just look for a place that has the following ingredients – easy access, soft waves, warm water and expert help – and you’ll be up and at it in no time at all.

Byron Bay, Australia

Once nothing more than a sleepy dairy town that barely merited a mention on the map, Byron Bay has become something of a Mecca for Australian surfers. It’s reputed to be one of the easiest places in the world to catch a wave. Beginners can start out with the gentle rollers at Watego Beach, and once they’ve gotten in the groove they’ll be itching to jump in the swells at The Wreck and Tallows beach.

There’s also a bunch of great surf schools that offer both beginner courses and accommodation. Be sure to go in March/May to catch the most consistent swells.

Kuta, Bali

Bali might be more famous for its grinding reef breaks, but it offers just as many options for beginners. One popular choice is the stretch of coastline running from Kuta to Legian, where smaller swells ensure learners can easily get to grips with the waves.

Kuta is cheap too, with dozens of beach huts renting out cheap surfboards, not too mention several schools offering instruction on how to do it right. May to September is the best time to go, when you’ll be assured of strong offshore winds and a party atmosphere to boot.

surfer-926339_640

Lagos, Portugal

The beach at Lagos itself doesn’t offer too many breaks, but the town is viewed as a great base to head off too numerous beaches that do. Lagos is home to numerous surfing schools that organize trips to beaches within 30 minutes drive of the city. We’d like to recommend the break at Arrifana, which is especially popular for learners thanks to its low tides.

The best time to check out Lagos is in spring and fall, when the weather is cooler and less tourists are about. It’s cheaper at those times of the year too.

Surfer’s Point, Barbados

The name is a dead giveaway. Surfer’s Point can be found on the southern coast of Barbados, away from the tourist hordes and located in an idyllic tropical setting. One of the best schools here is Zed’s Surfing Adventures, ran by the former Barbadian competitive surfer Zed Layson, who offers two hour lessons at extremely affordable prices.

Surfer’s Point is great for surfing anytime of the year, but more nervous beginners may want to avoid the June to October rainy season when the swell picks up a bit.

surfing-817968_640

Taghazout, Morocco

Taghazout in Morocco has been the best not-so-secret destination for European surfers since the 1970s thanks to its mix of easy beachbreaks and more demanding sandbottom points. Popular with German and Scandinavia surfers especially, Taghazout boasts one of the world’s most well-developed surf industries with dozens of highly-qualified trainers around who’ll offer a guarantee you’ll be left standing up at the end of your lesson.

Best time to go is in early fall, when the temperatures are slightly cooler and the waves aren’t quite so intimidating.

The Most Underrated Digital Nomad Hubs in The World

Travel Tips

IM00

The advent of the Internet means that many workers are no longer tied to working out of an office back at home. Technology allows us to always stay connected, and work from wherever we want. Whether you’ve got important meetings to attend, blog posts to write, or even an entire company to build, there’s nothing to stop you doing that from wherever in the world you want to be.

chile-673284_640

For digital nomads the world truly is their oyster, but it’s also a tough choice. No one can decide where they want to be but you, but we can help make that choice easier by listing some of the best upcoming digital nomad hubs that offer those three all-important essentials: decent Wi-Fi, a cheap cost of living, and abundant co-working spaces.

Davao, Philippines

For many digital nomads there’s nothing quite like the great outdoors for providing them with inspiration. If that sounds like you, there are few better places to be than Davao in the southern Philippines. Davao is ideal because it’s well known as the eco-adventure capital of the Philippines, with activities ranging from rafting, wakeboarding and ziplining. There’s also the popular Eden Nature Park, a great place to go camping, fishing, horseriding or hiking, whatever takes your fancy.

Despite being such a great natural place, Davao is also pretty well developed for the Philippines, which means you won’t have trouble getting online or finding other digital nomads to associate with.

Zagreb, Croatia

reflection-660948_640

A less obvious choice is Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Why would a digital nomad choose to end up here? Because they’ll never be bored, that’s why. Zagreb boasts one of Europe’s most vibrant cultural scenes, with arts, architecture, music, museums and tons of great food. Zagreb is also known for its music festivals, and the nearby Mount Medvednice and Jarun Lake are never too far away for those who like natural surroundings.

And when you need to get some work done, simply head off out to one of the numerous quiet coffee shops in the city, where you’ll likely meet dozens of similar-minded folk as you.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Chic and cosmopolitan Playa del Carmen is rapidly rising as one of the most popular hubs for digital nomads in North America, and with good reason too. It’s got great beaches, friendly locals, it’s cheap, and the surrounding areas are awash with natural beauty. It’s a great spot for those who love waters ports, with some of the most epic diving and snorkeling opportunities in all of Mexico.

And did we mention the nightlife? For younger digital nomads, it’s important to have some fun, and while the night scene might not be quite as wild as Cancun, there are still numerous clubs where you can party the night away till the early hours of the morning.

Bali, Indonesia

bali-570656_640

Indonesia’s most popular tourist spot is rapidly becoming a hit with digital nomads too. And why not, because Bali really has it all – the cheap living cost, the warm climate, the great beaches and the wild nightlife are all key attractions, as are the friendly locals (who can speak reasonable English too!). Throw in the fact that most apartments and resorts offer decent Internet speeds these days, with free Wi-Fi also very common in most cafes, and it’s easy to see why Bali is one of the fastest up and coming digital nomad hubs around.

Santiago, Chile

One of the latest additions to the digital nomad hit list is Santiago in Chile. For freelances who’re looking for a new place to explore, they could certainly do a lot worse. Santiago has it all – the breathtaking backdrop of the Andes Mountains and the mouthwatering cuisine are just two reasons to want to live here. There’s also a great art scene, dozens of beautiful parks, and the beach is never far away either. And while Santiago is a tad more expensive than some of the more obvious digital nomad hubs in Latin America, it’s still more than possible to live a great lifestyle for less than $2,000 a month.

The Best Snowbird Hubs in The World

Caribbean, Central America

For those who’re dreaming of avoiding the biting cold in their retirement, the idea of becoming a “snowbird” sounds most appealing. But although most snowbirds head south to one of the Sunbelt states, there are even better options for those willing to travel a little further afield.

costa-rica-318914_640

Costa Rica

Some snowbirds want more than just a different climate. They’re looking for a different culture, a different language, different people, and much more besides. If that sounds like you, you could do a whole lot worse than Costa Rica.

This Central American country is the favored retirement destination for thousands of Americans and with good reason too – it has everything, from beaches to beautiful rainforests and cool mountain communities. Costa Rica also boasts the third highest life expectancy in the Western hemisphere, and it’s affordable too. Snowbirds flock to here every year, with the most popular destinations being the Pacific coast communities of Flamingo, Malpais, Playa Hermosa and Tamarindo.

Hawaii

Next up is Hawaii, which might be too overcrowded for some, but is nonetheless blessed with the tropical climate and easy-going lifestyle that all snowbirds seek. The good news is that it almost never gets too hot thanks to the cool Pacific breeze, and the beach is never too far away no matter where you decided to take root.

Add to that the sailing, the fishing, the windsurfing and other watersports, and it’s not difficult to see why Hawaii is so popular. Best of all, you get a choice of islands too. While 95 percent of the people live on Oahu, Maui is considered to be the true vacationers’ paradise. Alternatively those seeking peace and quiet can head to the more remote Big Island, while the rainforests of Garden Isle in Kauai are also a popular option.

waikiki-beach-1037073_640

Panama

Panama might not have the infrastructure to match the above two destinations, but it’s fast catching up. It also has great winter weather, and they even use the U.S. dollar so there’s no need to worry about exchange rates. Panama is significant cheaper than the U.S. too, not too mention peaceful and safe. And if we throw in outdoor activities like hiking, golf and scuba, it’s not hard to see why so many Americans are choosing Panama as a retirement option.

Mexico

Moving a bit closer to home, Mexico offers numerous great locations for snowbirds including Puerto Vallarta with its large expat population, and the Yucutan Pensula with its small fishing village communities that offer a much more affordable way of life. Then there’s Playa del Carmen, which is more of an option for the younger snowbirds thanks to its more party-like feel. Seniors on the other hand, will probably prefer Manzanillo with its affordable beach-front condos.

Wherever you go in Mexico, you’ll be assured of great winter weather, delicious Mexican food, and even better low cost accommodations.

beach-649349_640

Cuba

Last but not least, the thaw in relations between the U.S. government and Cuba means that the Caribbean island has suddenly become an extremely tempting alternative for snowbirds.

Most visitors are draw in by Cuba’s extreme affordability – there are dozens of low-cost communities scattered throughout the island, as well as all-inclusive resorts. But Cuba offers more advantages than just the beaches and the weather – it’s just a short flight from Florida and the East Coast, which means you’ll never be too far away from the family.

The Spiciest Dishes in the World

Travel Tips

When it comes to eating, some people just like it hot. For those heat-seeking diners who just aren’t satisfied with anything that doesn’t have an eye-watering amount of spice in their dish, we’ve come up with a list of the seven spiciest dishes in the world where you can satisfy your cravings.

Suicide Chicken Wings

The name alone should serve as a warning about this dish. Just about everybody loves chicken wings, and plenty of people like spicy chicken wings too, but this deadly little dish is one to sort out the men from the boys. Think juicy chicken wings, drenched in hot Tabasco sauces, chilies and hot pepper flakes. Even just thinking about it makes my mouth hurt.

4917533835_0b0a23fc51_z

Neua Pad Prik

Anyone who’s traveled to Thailand before will be well aware of how hot the locals like their chow. And Neua Pad Prik is about as spicy as you can get. Made up of beef slices, and garnished with garlic, shallots and a heavy amount of birds-eye chilies, this deadly little dish will have even the most die-hard diners reaching for the water glass within just a few mouthfuls.

Wot

You what? That’s right, wot. And when you eat it, you really will want to shout “WHAT the hell is this?!” Because wot is insanely hot. It comes from Ethiopia, which is somewhat surprisingly home to several of the spiciest dishes in the word. Wot is made from generous handfuls of onions and garlic and of course, the essential spices and chilies that are the most important ingredient.

5097664539_a8f84aa14f_z

Cau Cau

Cau Cau is a peculiar little dish that hails from Peru in South America. Peru is another place that few will think of when you mention spicy food, and that can be dangerous because this is one for the fire-eaters. Cau Cau is basically a kind of potato and tripe stew, but the only difference is it’s blended with mouthfuls of ají or chili peppers that ensure every mouthful will be a lasting one.

Otak Otak

Indonesia is the home of this particular dish, although it can also be found in Malaysia and Singapore. Otak Otak is a kind of spicy fish cake served in grilled banana leaves. As pleasant as that sounds, eaters should be aware that it’s also brim full of dried chilies, as well as ginger, peppers, galangal and more. Ouch.

4515840181_1f004a588f_z

Pad Prik Khing

Another Thai dish, Pad Prik Khing is about 95 percent just pork and fried vegetables. But it’s the sauce that’s the killer, made up of onions, garlic, dried red chilies and chili ginger. It’s guaranteed to burn.

Sik Sik Wat

Yep, another kind of “what” dish that’s guaranteed to scorch your taste buds in just one spoonful. Sik Sik Wat is the second Ethiopian dish on our list, and with good reason. Made with chicken, beef and fenugreek, and spiced up with paprikas and chili peppers, this somewhat innocent but gooey-looking mess is reputed to be one of the hottest, if not the hottest, dish in the world.

The Best Beaches in Thailand

Thailand

The Land of Smiles is famous for being the perfect tropical island getaway. Thailand boasts more than 2,000 miles of coastline and a stunning 8,000 islands, with a wide variety of beaches to suit every taste. From endless stretches of sand packed with partying travelers to quiet secluded coves, you won’t be stuck for choice. Here’s a quick rundown of our top five best beaches in Thailand.

Patong Beach

15292515860_faa1eff20c_z

If you’re looking to do more than just splash around in the water and soak up the sun, then the activity-packed Patong Beach in Phuket is as good as it’s going to get. Patong is known as Phuket’s unofficial party capital, filled with bars, nightclubs, restaurants and outdoor markets. But the real gem is the 3.5km long Patong Beach, with its jet ski rentals, para-sailing adventures, diving trips, scuba tours, kayak rides and a whole lot more besides.

Patong Beach is almost always busy, which makes it the best choice for those who love being in a crowd.

Haad Rin

Located on the island of Koh Pha Ngan, Haad Rin is the beach where you’ll find Thailand’s world famous Full Moon Party.

Admittedly the Full Moon Party isn’t going to suit everyone’s tastes, but it’s the number one destination in Thailand for thousands of younger travelers who flock to the island each year. Now held twice a month (there’s a Half Moon Party too), this beautiful beach is transformed into a party-goers heaven with massive sound systems everywhere and crowds of alcohol-fueled hipsters and happy folk dancing the night away.

Haad Rin is unsurprisingly one of the top destinations for the backpacker crowd, but may not be such a great option for older folk or those traveling with kids.

Phra Nang Beach

thailand-789710_640

Phra Nang Beach is located in Krabi province in the south of Thailand, at the tip of the Railay peninsula that extends out into the Andaman Sea. Although it’s popular with backpackers there’s none of the party madness that goes on at Haad Rin. Instead, visitors are blessed with the sight of stunning limestone cliffs, beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters.

Besides being beautiful, there’s also plenty of activities to do, from jet-skis and sailing trips to fishing and more. Best of all though, Phra Nang Beach is known as one of Thailand’s top rock climbing destinations. Those who want to scale the stunning cliffs can choose from numerous climbing instructors who’ll be only too happy to show them the ropes.

The beach has to be accessed via long tail boat from nearby Ao Nang beach, but although getting there is slightly unconventional, that doesn’t stop it from getting quite crowded during the busy months.

White Sand Beach

For family fun there’s few better beaches than White Sand Beach on Koh Chang, the second-largest of Thailand’s islands. But although it’s big, Koh Chang’s location in the southeast of Thailand (far away from popular tourist islands like Koh Samui and Phuket) means it’s a lot less crowded than the typical bustling resort in Thailand, which makes it a great escape for those who prefer to spend their time on vacation relaxing.

Of course, there are still plenty of bars, restaurants and markets to keep visitors occupied when they get bored of lounging around in the sun.

Maya Bay

thailand-180828_640

Last but certainly not least, Maya Bay is instantly recognizable for being the location where Leonardo DiCaprio’s hit film “The Beach” was shot, unmistakably exotic with its tall cliffs and stunning white sands. Maya Bay’s popularity is arguably one the major reasons why the south of Thailand is so popular with backpackers today, and even though the beach isn’t as unspoilt as it once was thanks to the numerous resorts which now line it, it still retains much of its stunning natural beauty. It’s also not as busy as other tourist destinations.

Maya Bay is also well known for the excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities on offer, but travelers should be aware there are no accommodations on the island – instead, travelers visit the island for the day and sleep on the larger Ko Phi Phi Don.

Where to Travel in 2016?

Travel Tips

What with the New Year almost upon us there’s no better time to start planning your next trip. But where to travel in 2016? If you’re struggling to think of a new and exciting place to jet off too, you may want to consider one of the following five emerging destinations for your holiday break next year.

Cuba

oldtimer-629006_640

What with the improved relations between Cuba and the U.S., Americans are no longer banned from flying to the mysterious Caribbean island. And that puts Cuba right at the top of anyone’s up-and-coming travel destination list thanks to its mix of great beaches, old-fashioned charm, traditional Spanish architecture, friendly locals and warm, vibrant Latino culture. Add to the fact that Chanel is planning to add the island hotspot to its resort runway and it’s clear that Cuba is well on the way to becoming a vacation hot spot.

Be sure to delve into Cuban culture by taking a specially curate tour that explores the country’s people, art and history.

Iceland

horse-881683_640

There are few more unique places to visit than the volcanically active Iceland, which has traditionally ranked as one of the top off-the-beaten-path destinations. Iceland boasts all kinds of natural wonders, including hot springs, waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes, while its black sand beaches are also not to be missed, even if sunbathing there might be out of the question.

Although it’s not exactly a tropical paradise, with summer temperatures averaging just over twenty degrees C, Iceland does offer plenty of activities to keep you busy, from whale watching and sailing trips to volcano tours and the spectacular Blue Lagoon, with its in-water massages and natural sauna. There really is something for everyone!

Croatia

dubrovnik-512798_640

Croatia’s upcoming popularity owes much to the success of the Game of Thrones series, where many of the show’s scenes were shot. Nonetheless, Croatia has been the best kept secret of European travelers for many a year. With hundreds of miles of Adriatic Sea coastline, Croatia is a great place to soak up the sunshine, while its ancient towns with their Instagram-esque views will ensure you absorb everything about the local culture too.

Be sure not too miss out on Dubrovnik, Croatia’s most spectacular old city by the sea that offers unbeatable views of the Adriatic Sea.

Myanmar

downtown-669909_640

Myanmar was off limits to many morally conscious travelers for year due to its being ruled by a ruthless military dictatorship. But times are changing and with the country about to return to civilian rule for the first time in decades, this Southeast Asian gem is well and truly back on the map.

And what a destination it is. What with hundreds of ornately designed Buddhist temples to see, gilded pagodas at every turn and bustling street bazaars, Myanmar’s diverse attractions add up to a wholly unique travel experience in a nation that’s still largely untouched by the tourist hordes.

Antarctica

emperor-penguins-429127_640

Last but not least, we’d like to recommend Antarctica as the ultimate wilderness trip for 2016. The Earth’s only uninhabited continent might not be the best place for bikini-clad travelers, but the spectacular white sheets of ice that make up its glaciers well and truly make up for the lack of sunshine. What’s more, a cruise to the south pole is packed with activities too, from wildlife tours to icy kayak rides and more.
